The Hardwick Historical Society (HHS) is a small collecting repository and museum dedicated to preserving the history of the the town of Hardwick, its settlements, businesses, and people. The HHS has its museum in the restored Hardwick Railroad Depot, where it serves researchers and exhibits materials relating to the granite and railroad industry, local schools, the Civil War, Hardwick’s business community, and its people. In addition to museum exhibits, the HHS holds its archival materials — a large collection of documents and images as well as a complete collection of Hardwick newspapers back to the mid-1890s — at the Depot. Come see us. The Hardwick Historical Society has no paid staff, but it has a dedicated corps of volunteers.

Closed for Winter
That’s a wrap, we’re officially closed for winter. Thank you for a wonderful 2025 season! In fact, despite the balcony remaining closed throughout the run, we had our busiest season ever. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2025 the Town House was host to a wedding, civic discussions, a surprise 50th anniversary party, exhibits of local artists, a high school play, several concerts, a touring psychic medium, and of course the 59th season of the Craftsbury Chamber Players.
We’ll see you again on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 for Hardwick’s Town Meeting.

On one special weekend, Dracula invites creatures like the Invisible Man, the Mummy and others to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez). However, an unforeseen complication unfolds when an ordinary human unwittingly crashes the party and falls in love with Mavis.

The Civic Standard Presents
Roochie Toochie and The Ragtime Shepherd kings
When you see the Ragtime Shepherd Kings you’ll witness: fancy fiddling, dueling hawaiian guitars, ukelele wizardry, a menagerie of toy instruments, vocal harmonies that sound as if they were polished by hand, a musical pig “porkestra,” and whatever else the gang has up their sleeves. The Roochie Toochies are Joel Jackson, Lindsay McCaw, Timmy Findlen, Matt Bell and Joy Patterson. These musical pals joined forces because of their love of novelty music from the wax cylinder era and have brought to life music from 90-100 years ago in a way that delights people from 7-97. They live in New Orleans, Nashville and Detroit, but they get together each year to tour out-of-the-way and in-the-way places. They have appeared at festivals all over the US including the Black Pot Festival in Louisiana, Kauai Old Time Gathering, Kauai, HI; Knoxville Stomp, Knoxville, TN; The Minnesota Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association Festival; Indiana Fiddler’s Gathering, Battle Ground, IN; Old Tone Roots Music Festival, Hillsdale, NY and the Wheatland Traditional Arts Festival in Remus, MI. They were first place winners of the Neotraditional Band Contest at the Appalachian String Band Festival in West Virginia in 2015.

Aristophanes’ Lysistrata tells the story of a woman on a mission to end the Peloponnesian War between Greek city-states by taking an unconventional approach to diplomacy. The protagonist, Lysistrata, organizes a coalition of women who unite to collectively withhold affection from all the men of the land! 😲💃 It’s clever, funny, and just a little cheeky!
Directed by Marc Considine, with music direction by Mavis MacNeil and support from Leah Gagnon and Andrew Koehler, this production promises to be an unforgettable experience! We can’t wait to see you there to share some laughs, music, and a bit of Greek mischief with our community. 🌟

Soup to Nuts: An Eccentric History of Food & Hardwick Historical Society Annual Meeting
After a brief annual meeting, the Hardwick Historical Society presents:
Soup to Nuts: An Eccentric History of Food
This history of what and how we eat encompasses everything from the prehistoric mammoth luau to the medieval banquet to the modern three squares a day. Writer Rebecca Rupp, explores the rocky evolution of table manners, the not-so-welcome invention of the fork, the awful advent of portable soup, and the surprising benefits of family dinners – plus some catchy info on seasonal foods. What’s the story of chocolate? Why do the Irish eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day? Who invented lemonade? Why are turkeys called turkeys? And what are sugarplums anyway?
This talk is free, open to the public, and accessible to those with disabilities. For more information, contact Hardwick Historical Society at (802) 472-6424 or info@hardwickvthistory.org.

Thomas C. Hubka on How the Working-Class Home Became Modern, 1900-1940
Hardwick Historical Society will host author Thomas C. Hubka for a lecture and discussion of his book How the Working-Class Home Became Modern, 1900-1940 (University of Minnesota Press, December 2020).
After the talk, there will be a Q & A session and book signing. Books will be available for purchase on-site.

In How the Working-Class Home Became Modern, 1900–1940, Hubka analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions. These improvements were intertwined with the acquisition of entirely new mechanical conveniences, new types of rooms and patterns of domestic life, and such innovations—from public utilities and kitchen appliances to remodeled and multi-unit housing—are at the center of the story Hubka tells. It is a narrative, amply illustrated and finely detailed, that traces changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle class—and that, in Hubka’s telling, reconfigures and enriches the standard account of the domestic transformation of the American home.
